About The Gazette
European politics, reported from inside the EU bubble and written without the Brussels fog.
The Gazette is an independent, English-language desk covering the European Union: the Commission, the Parliament, the Council, the Court of Justice, the European Central Bank and the national politics that shape them. We write for two readers at once — the person who has never understood how Brussels works, and the person who works there.
Our rule is simple. Every piece of institutional jargon gets translated the moment it appears. Trilogue, comitology, qualified majority, rapporteur, Coreper, infringement — if a term needs a glossary, the sentence around it should already be the glossary.
We also believe that seriousness and dry wit are not opposites. European institutions are consequential and frequently absurd at the same time, and we say so — about situations, procedures and institutional habits, never about individuals, and never when a story involves death, war or human suffering.
The Gazette does not take sides between parties, governments or political families. We describe what happened, who wanted what, and what it changes for people who will never set foot in the Berlaymont.
