Trump approves domestic Patriot missile production licence for Ukraine, Zelenskyy says

US President Donald Trump has made a "final decision" to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot missile interceptors domestically, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Kyiv has spent months pushing for the authority to manufacture the high-tech interceptors on home soil, arguing that local production is critical to protecting its cities and civilian infrastructure against ongoing Russian ballistic missile strikes.

Patriot interceptors are among the most effective shields against high-speed ballistic missiles, but Ukrainian forces have faced persistent shortages relying solely on Western inventory transfers. Securing a manufacturing licence enables Kyiv to build a direct supply pipeline, transitioning from emergency supply requests toward self-sustained defence manufacturing capable of bolstering its long-term security.

Although the licensing deal is a bilateral arrangement between Washington and Kyiv, it touches directly on Europe's wider security calculus. European governments have struggled to match the pace of Ukraine's air defence requirements from their own limited stockpiles. Kyiv obtaining direct production rights for top-tier American military hardware underlines the ongoing effort across the continent to ramp up defence industrial capacity and reduce vulnerability to supply bottlenecks.

Setting up production lines for advanced missile systems is a complex industrial undertaking. Kyiv must now coordinate with US defence contractors to handle technology transfers, secure component supply chains, and establish secure manufacturing facilities capable of producing operational interceptors.
