Von der Leyen Visits Emergency Hub to Commend Crisis Response Teams

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid a visit to the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) in Brussels to express direct gratitude to personnel handling emergency management across the bloc. Speaking alongside the European Commissioner for Crisis Management and the Director-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), von der Leyen delivered a message of thanks to both front-line staff and behind-the-scenes teams working at the operational hub. She commended the facility for stepping up during critical moments when Europe requires joint action and immediate assistance.

The ERCC functions as the operational core of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, operating around the clock to track, assess, and respond to disasters within Europe and globally. When member states or partner nations face emergencies that exceed their national response capacity—such as extreme weather events, wildfires, floods, or humanitarian crises—the centre coordinates incoming requests for aid with pledges of personnel, equipment, and logistical support from across the continent.

While much of the European Commission's daily work involves long-term legislative drafting and policy negotiations, DG ECHO and the ERCC represent one of the executive's few direct operational arms. High-profile presidential visits to the centre serve a dual purpose: boosting morale among operational staff and providing the Berlaymont with a clear, tangible example of European integration delivering direct assistance on the ground.

The ERCC will maintain its 24/7 operational posture, tracking global hazard alerts and coordinating civil protection assets whenever member states or international partners request European assistance.
