What is a trilogue, really?

What happened
A trilogue is an informal negotiation between the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission to agree a single text before the formal votes take place.
Why it matters
Almost all EU legislation is now agreed in trilogue at first reading. If you want to know what the law will say, this is the room.
The Brussels angle
Trilogues are informal, which means no minutes and enormous influence for whoever holds the pen on the four-column document.
